“Nice Family Vacation”

My husband and I stayed with our 2 young daughters at this hotel for 3 nights. The hotel staff is so friendly. It definitely feels more like a boutique or family run hotel. Breakfast in included every morning and has a great selection: eggs, french toast, bagels, toast, waffles, cereal, oatmeal, juice, coffee, etc.

The rooms are very well appointed.....clean, nicely decorated, spacious. The pool and jacuzzi outside are nice too. Not a luxury resort but very clean with water, towels and swim diapers available. You could hear the traffic and the train occasionally when outside, but it didn't bother us.

The hotel is 5 minutes from te beach and restaurants. I recommend trying Norte if you like Mexican food. Legoland is also 5 minutes away. The hotel has 2 shuttles...a minivan and a suburban and they will take you to these places if you like free of charge. We used them one day and they were so quick and easy. They have car seats too if you need them.

Overall, our stay st this hotel was excellent. If you are not going to Legoland, I would probably pick another beach before I went back to Carlsbad. If you need a hotel that is great value for the money, clean and comfortable with a super friendly staff, then this is the right place!

Well, like the title says, I didn'tre really believe what had been written here. But then I stayed at the place. A wonderful experience. The most courteous staff I've ever encountered, including at 5 star resorts. They were helpful, but never intrusive. The beds are very comfortable. The rooms are not very large, but quite well laid-out. Huge showers and Aveda ammenities. A very nice hot breakfast buffet is offered every morning, and you can't beat the chocolate cookies at night (I'm a CCC addict!)! I was there with family, but I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone who asks, for business or pleasure. It's very conveniently located near all of the San Diego theme attractions (Sea World, Legoland, Wild Animal Park), and to Laguna Beach, for more artful adult pursuits. And they have a free business center, a beautiful pool and a perfectly heated jacuzzi. Oh, and did I mention the great staff???

I have stayed at the West in Carlsbad twice for business and I LOVE IT. There is not much to complain about, this actually gets really picky now:

Location between I-5 and the train tracks is not ideal, but it guarantees quick access to the freeway. You cannot hear the traffic when inside, but the trains you can. Not a big deal though.

I wish the bathroom door would stay open and not shut itself. The bathroom ventilation is not the best and I got really hot drying my hair, it would have been nice to be able to throw the door open to get more air.

And there is no coat hook by the door, even though there is plenty of space for it.

Parking can be a little tight in the evenings when the valet for the neighbouring restaurants ropes of sections of the lot. This was probably the most annoying thing about the hotel.

See, that is the worst I can come up with. And now to the positives, service is good and friendly. Rooms (just like the entire hotel) are relatively roomy, updated and very nicely decorated. Breakfast is included and it is actually pretty good. They also serve cookies and milk between 8 pm and 10 pm.

I really want to go to West soon again.

I cannot add too much more to the reviews below. This was my second stay here and I just love it.
The rooms are immaculate, the staff is wonderful, and the restaurant on the premises is top notch.
If this hotel were in the city, you could expect to pay 50% more.

There really are not enough words to describe just how excellent my experience was at the West Inn and Suites in Carlsbad. Even though we got in very late the night of arrival (just after midnight), the staff at check-in was extremely helpful and cordial. Upon arrival, we walked into a room that was very well appointed, beyond clean, and definitely warm and inviting. After driving for 2.5 hours, it was a great sight to see. The beds are fantastic. The morning breakfast buffet was perfect for a business traveler on the go and had more than enough options to choose from. I can't say enough about the staff and its service -- it was definitely above and beyond that of other hotels. You can't go wrong here!

Spent two nights at the West Inn and Suites in January. Gorgeous hotel. Loved the breakfast in the morning. Pool and spa were clean, fitness room was small, but clean as well. Complimentary shuttle to Legoland, which saved us parking $. The restaurant on-site was packed with people, so we headed up the road to Islands. And much to my husband's dismay, the outlets are close by! Great time- can't wait to return.

As other's have said, I was skeptical about this hotel because of its proximity to the freeway & train tracks but after reading many positive reviews I thought I'd give it a try. I must admit that once I was inside the hotel I did not notice the freeway AT ALL. I occasionally noticed the train whistle but it didn't bother me one bit honestly I rather enjoyed the sound of it. The staff at the front desk was genuinely helpful & hosipitable & we were allowed to check in coniderably early & freshen up before heading off to Lego land which is very close. (I called before hand to arrange an early check in) the rooms are really lovely & tastefully decorated in a contemporary fashion that we like. NO FLORAL BEDSPREADS HERE! The king suite we rented had plenty of room for my family. My 7 y/o son slept on the pull out couch, my baby daughter was comfy in a crib provided by the hotel ($10/day) and my husband and I slept very comfortably in the king size bed with high end bedding. The room had a larger bath with a full tub, a mini-fridge & microwave and two tv's. As it was a little chilly on the weekend we visited, we did not use the pool or jacuzzi but had a view of both & they were quite lovely but not huge. On our first night they turned down our bed & I requested that they also open my sons bed as well. On the second night we were getting ready to leave for dinner when housekeeping came to turn down the bed. We asked that they return in a few minutes. Then, while leaving for dinner we saw them in the hallway. When we later returned they had neither turned down the bed or opened up the sleep sofa. It really bugged my husband who had specifically asked for them to return later. We had another issue with housekeeping on our first morning when we went down for breakfast & told them (in the hallway) we'd be back shortly & my husband asked them not to clean until after we left for the day. Yet when we returned 30 minutes later, someone was cleaning our room. It was really awkward as we each tried to have some 'bathroom' time while the housekeeper waited! We took advantage of the complimentary breakfast both days & it was simple but fine and a real savings (in both time & money). One morning there were eggs, sausage & cinnamon french toast. The following morning there were eggs, bacon & waffles (frozen). In addiditon to this there's juice, coffe/tea, hot/cold cereal, fruit. toast/bagels/sweet breads etc. Overall I would recommended this hotel to other people visiting the area. The beds were very comfy, the rooms tastefully decorated & clean & overall the staff was hospitable.

West Inn & Suites Carlsbad

The West Inn and Suites was the last hotel we stayed at during our familys 2 week California Adventure, we traveled from Yosemite through Hollywood / Anaheim and ended our vacation with 3 nights at the West Inn while we explored San Diego. Great easy access to San Diego. The King Size beds and night time chocolate chip cookies were a big hit. The outside pool was great for relaxing after a day of touring. Loved the beach nearby, we went down on two seperate nights to watch the sunset and let the kids play in the ocean. Some of the highlights while staying at this hotel was visiting:

The Zoo - Tram ride, Koala bears, Pandas and Tour bus around the park

Sea World - Getting drenched by a dolphin, Shamu, feeding the dolphins

Seeing the seals at Laguna Beach

Eating at an outdoor cafe in Old Town San Diego - Ladies cooking up tortillas all day long along the sidewalk

Watching the Sunset from the Beach near the hotel; kids playing in the Pacific - Great way to end the day

The staff alone at this property make it worth the stay. They are friendly, courteous and actually care about your satisfaction in all areas. I was given late checkout without any hesitation, they told me where to buy groceries, how to get to the beach and good places to eat. The rooms are great too. Incredibly clean and fresh smelling. We stayed in a double king room that had plenty of space. We slept well and were very comfortable the whole time.

The lobby is inviting and the free daily breakfast is outstanding. The pool and jacuzzi are exceptional as well. The kids loved the pool and of course the cookies and milk every night in the lobby. The location of this hotel is fantastic too. Just over a mile from Legoland, downtown Carlsbad and a short walk to the beach. Close to I-5 to make the trip down to SeaWorld quick and easy.

I give this 5 stars out of 5. I will definitely be staying here again.

We stayed here for 4 nights--just a great experience overall. The staff was so friendly and eager to please, the rooms were very clean and nicely decorated, the turndown service with cookies was a great touch as were the warm cookies and cold milk in the lobby at bedtime. The location was perfect, right off of the expressway and so close to the beach. While the property is situated between a highway and train tracks, when you walk in the door you forget this and are transported to such a soothing environment, a true oasis.

Excellent Hotel:

I booked this hotel on-line with my airfare. We wanted to take the kids to Lego Land off-season. What a great hotel. The service was excellent. You were always greeted and the kids loved the cookies and milk at 8:00 p.m. every night. The outdoor pool was clean with fresh towels and lemon water and swim diapers if you forgot to bring any on your vacation. Breakfast was included and had a nice variety and a wonderful staff to help and keep tables clean. Board games for kids to play in sitting area if weather was bad! Free shuttle service to Lego Land -at tops a ten-minute wait! If I were on business or a family vacation I would choose this hotel. We were a family of five so we selected the double king suite. My daughter slept on the pull-out sofa and at night chocolates were placed on the beds. Clean, comfortable and our stay was very enjoyable. My hats off to every person who works at the hotel. We are young parents with 2 young boys who love to travel and stay in nicer hotels. We have stayed at the West Inn and Suites countless times - since almost the day they opened their doors. Let me tell you that we've had a truly wonderful, enjoyable stay at this hotel consistently every time. The hotel itself is so beautifully and tastefully decorated. It rivals many higher end hotels we've stayed in, just in a smaller scale. The rooms have king beds (some even come with 2!). The suites are also a great option because the kids love to run around and have their own space (and so do we I guess). The rooms are beautiful, comfortable, spacious and always extremely clean & well kept. I believe they even have free bottled water in the room. One of the best things they offer is the complimentary milk & cookies in the lobby each night. The kids love to get into their pajamas, run down the stairs, and get their goodies before going to bed. They also offer a complimentary breakfast in the dining room each morning. The selection is more than decent and the kids definitely get their fill. This is a great bonus especially if you're headed out to Legoland for the day. The staff is also top-notch and I believe the hotel's management has everything to do with it. This hotel really deserves its #1 rating in Carlsbad and I only wish that they have a hotel like West Inn & Suites wherever we travel. The best part is that their rates are always reasonable - roughly around $150/nt. You definitely feel like you're at a 4-star hotel but paying a 3-star price. Again, I can't give this place enough kudos. They're absolutely the best place to stay at in Carlsbad - hands down!

My husband and I just returned from our trip to Carlsbad. If you are not familiar with Carlsbad, it is about 25 minutes from downtown San Diego or the airport. We stayed at the West inn for 5 nights and it was wonderful! First of all, the location is great if you are needing to get on/off Highway 5. It is seconds from the Highway which made my husband's commute to his seminar easy. It is also a few blocks from the ocean. I actually walked to the beach and it only took me a few minutes. The beach area is great! There is a walking/joggin path that runs up and down the beach. Very safe and very clean. The west inn breakfast is from 6-10 every morning and it was one of the best "free" breakfasts I have ever had (comparable to Embassy suites). They had a cappaccino machine which I loved, eggs, sausage or bacon, waffles or french toast plus fruit, yogurt, oatmeal, bagels, and pasteries. Something for everyone! The hotel staff were extremely friendly and courteous as well. I used the fitness center which was quite small, but I was the only one in it, so it worked out great for me. There was an elliptical, a treadmill, a bike, and then a small "universal gym". There is two flat screen tvs in there as well. Although small, it was a very clean gym with bottled water available and towels. So overall, we had a wonderful stay and highly recommend this hotel! :)

Just stayed at the West Inn and Suites based on Trip Advisor reviews, and was very, very impressed. The beds, sheets, and pillows were Four Seasons quality; the marble bathrooms stocked with Aveda products were spotless; the free breakfast buffet, including eggs, sausage, croissants, bagels, yogurt, and fruit salad, was delicious and satisfying; and the staff, including housekeeping staff, was warm and friendly. This hotel is a short walk to the beatiful Carlsbad beach, and a five-minute drive to Legoland. The only negative aspect is its location next to the freeway, but otherwise, expect a terrific hotel experience. Also, not to be missed is the newly opened restaurant next door, Bistro West. Ahi Tuna and Fried Calamari appetizers are to die for, as is the Filet Mignon/Short Ribs entree. The restaurant features a wood-burning pizza oven and terrific pastas and hamburgers. Professional service, great wine list. Didn't have the chance to try the West Steak and Seafood Restaurant, a more formal dining venue, but will do so next time!

This hotel was better than any of the luxury hotels we have stayed in, in the past. The rooms are so clean as well as very nice! The service was superior. So well appointed you think you are in luxury hotel. The staff was so friendly and helpful. My son got very sick and they didn't blink an eye, were very kind! Cookies and milk every night, nice pool and good bistro next door! We will go back. Two minutes to Lego land and the beach. Downtown Carlsbad also down the street. The kids had own room adjoining ours. Was a wonderful experience(except for one night with sick child). Very family friendly. We were about 30 minutes from zoo and Wild animal Park. Very easy to get to.

This hotel was exactly what I expected from reading reviews. It was really clean and smelled great. The only teeny weeny negative I would say is that the breakfast staff are a little too eager. They were very, very quick to remove plates, newspapers... if you dared get up to get another glass of juice your half eaten breakfast was removed and you barely read newspaper trashed. They were always hovering about which did not make for a relaxing breakfast. If they could address this it would definetly be a 10 in my book.

Evacuated during the horrific San Diego Fires, we called every hotel in the area and this property although full offered to put us on the waitlist (3 adults and a dog),they called back in 3 hours and we got 2 fab rooms. The staff were amazing, they had doggy water bowls, treats and leashes, there is a dog area in the parking lot and a little park across the street. They DID NOT gouge us on the room rate like other hotels in the areas were not ashamed to do to people in need. The rooms were immaculate, the breakfast was delicious and the restaurant West Bistro next door is superb. We can't thank the hotel enough for making our stay during the crisis so easy.

Tripadvisor reviewers have it right. It's definitely a great place for a stay in the Carlsbad area. The location is ideal - about 10 minutes or less to Legoland, a few meters and a left turn to I-5.

We got in early evening on Christmas day and the hotel staff was very accommodating and helpful in suggesting places to eat that were open. The desk person (sorry, I did not get her name) suggested Sammy's Woodfried Pizza down the road but since we've been doing pizza/hot dogs all day, we were ready for something more like Chinese food. They did not know any other place that was open. After getting into our room, she called to check in on how the room was and mentioned that they found that Benihana was also open. Needless to say, we had a good meal there that night (as good as one can get at a Benihana). This is the kind of service that makes me rate this place highly.

You can read about the rooms (spacious/modern) and the grounds (hot tub) on their web site. The breakfasts, while good and hot, got repetitive after 4 days (scrambled eggs, bacon or sausage, french toast, and a selection of pastries, etc.) There was underground parking and my kids had fun scootering around the cordoned off area (for valet, I think) in the underground parking lot.

Did I also mention the turndown service? We were surprised to have the sofa bed set up when we returned from dinner. Most places don't bother with that anymore.

We did hear the trains (only occasionally) but it did not really bother us.

The lobby and room are very tastefully done in dark rich colors that reflect colors of 2007--almost same colors as our home!
Our room had 2 king beds and they were extremely comfortable.
the room also had a modern and clean fridge, microwave, and a wetbar sink...what a bonus...
the pool was actually quite warm with a large whirlpool ...very clean!
the smell of the hotel and room reflected a christmas cinnamon smell which i liked a lot...
at 8pm to 10pm every night, there were free choco chip cookies and milk so that was a treat and in the morning from 6 to 10am there was a nice buffet breakfast..
our bathroom was quite large with marble floors and counters and everything was new looking and clean.
DOWNSIDE
-when we checked in we asked for a late check out and we were only given 1 extra hour and no more otherwise we need to pay for half a day.
-we can hear the plumbing from our room early in the morning from other guests .
-from time to time, we could hear the train horn but not too often.

Overall, we will come back to stay at this property now that we have found this gem...i love it !!!

We stayed at the West Inn & Suites in Carlsbad, CA over the Thanksgiving holiday, based on the reviews here. We found it above average in every way. Although it is located near the 5 freeway, the rooms are extremely quiet. The hotel is immaculate, with high quality bedding and and all the amenities. On the strength of the reviews (taken with a bit of salt), we booked a room here. We were somewhat disappointed that the room wasn't exactly a suite as we've come to know them ( where there is a little kitchenette and a separation between the functional parts of the room). But that wasn't a showstopper. The bed was very comfortable, and the bedding felt much more luxurious than I had expected. There were nice touches everywhere, like beautiful fresh flower arrangements all over and fresh flowers in the rooms.

The staff was amazingly friendly. They were so helpful with getting shuttles to attractions. They even had child seats for their shuttles.

We appreciated the breakfast that is included. While it's not something to write home about there was something for everyone: Scrambled eggs, french toast, sausage, granola, cereals, toast, pastries, coffee, tea, variety of juices, etc.

I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone headed to this area.

We stayed at the West Inn and Suites in a Double King Suite for two nights on a recent family vacation to San Diego and the LA area. This hotel is beautiful inside and out and for the online promotional rate of $216 per night, I feel we got a great deal for our money.

This hotel got my husband's seal of approval and our two boys declared it to be "the best hotel ever" and said that it "seemed just like home". We had two king beds with nice linens and down comforters, a pull out bed in the living room area, two flat screen TV's and an average size but very beautiful bathroom with walk in tiled shower. Our boys took advantage of the heated pool and spa both nights and we spent a while one morning after the complete complimentary breakfast in the "library" where our boys played with blocks and we played a couple of games of Jenga. Both the front desk (Ryan) and the housekeepers I encountered were both helpful and friendly.

The only minor downfalls of this wonderful hotel would be the following: the train does go by during the day and night - I am used to nearby train noise but my husband did find it woke him up a couple times during the night. The I-5 is very close by and we didn't hear that at all in our room but did hear it when we were out by the pool/spa area at night. Other than that, the eggs in the breakfast room one morning were cold according to my husband. Those are the only negatives I can possibly think of and none of these would come close to keeping us from coming back to this great place.

Highly recommended to one and all and we would definitely try and stay here again in the future when we are down in the San Diego area. Our family's best hotel experience yet by far.
